Behind the story
Susan’s memoir in progress, The Education of A Feminist, puts a personal face on the successes, failures, and unfinished work of US women’s movements. As a young feminist living in Bogota, Colombia, she planned a career fighting for equity and justice for women. Then in 1970 her daughter Amy was born with physical and developmental challenges. Her marriage faltered and Susan returned home with Amy but without her husband. Theory and practice collided.
The book weaves the social changes and feminist history of the past fifty years with Susan’s early feminist views and the barriers she encountered as a single mother striving to shape a feminist career while caring for Amy.
There is a long way to go in the unresolved fight for women’s equality. By looking back, reflecting, and making meaning of things that are even today complex and confusing, Susan illustrates the emotional and psychological imprint of patriarchy as she experienced it, and reminds readers of the ways patriarchy (or just ‘it”?) continues to foster misogyny, racism, and class biases?) that ( or: “and”)perpetuate injustice today. Reliable research, passionate activism, and women’s personal stories are all needed to confront and ( or: to power work to) change this reality.
